Street Food II – Fai Chi Kei
Fai Chi Kei is one of the seven parishes of Macau, one of the biggest administrative subdivisions (of the municipalities). It’s quite intensely populated – almost one third of Macau’s population allocated there. It stretches from the west of the peninsula across to the east.
We never blame anyone here missing Fai Chi Kei, a place with few or actually no attraction spot at all. What makes it fancy? Well, taste and feel the “down-to-earth”, the original “looks lousy but lovely food”. Homemade by locals with a “cool attitude”. All rounded by high rise residential blocks and public housings – intense structures with courtyards and breezeways in between.
“Fai Chi Kei’, meaning ‘chopstick base’ – came from the first iconic two story building in 1932. It all stood in parallel – both aligned on top of the rectangular foundations like chopsticks with holder. The name still kept using officially. Fai Chi Kei cater purely for locals perhaps working on shift, or casino operators that feel like some food late night after work; the best recommended place for night street food.
There are few main streets good to recommend at Fai Chi Kei. Great selection of food restaurants at Rua do Comandante João Belo (俾若翰街); to Street Food Malls Avenida do General Castelo Branco (白郎古將軍大馬路); are always my big favorite picks.
Two street blocks down further – Avenida Marginal do Lam Mau (林茂海邊大馬路). It provides special western food cuisine of all kinds (Korean food, Cha Chan Ten, Cakes, Cafes etc).
Today will give a quick intro on one of the bests street food malls – opposite the Macau Greyhound Place (recently shut down in 2018).
Mr Dumpling Guy Hung Hing 宏興餃子
One of the best recommended Chinese pork dumplings; always crowded with a dozen people or above for $5 patacas take away. Always freshly made, with a huge dumpling fried pan ready open from afternoon onwards.
Cake shop back to the 80s
My best favorites, $7-$8 patacas a piece of cake to my craving birthday cream cake are always my best favorite. Opposite street malls all vegetable stalls, and one “ding the bell 2 pm all you can pick ‘vegetable lucky bag for sale, just for $15 patacas per bag!
Local fish balls, fried snacks
Best fried snacks, fish balls and chicken wings of all kinds. Selling each piece from $6 patacas above, strongly recommend to add their curry sauce in your take away bowl.
Best curry sauce of all kinds you can get
One of my best favourites every time after late from work, each assorted small bowl costs you $38 patacas. Same price set back 2009; The second generation taking over the business over 20 years. Get what you pick, provided a silver plate to choose from each food tray display.
Best barbeque store
From barbeque pork, pork spare ribs, chicken wings, to ducklings – the most yummiest food you can ever find there, either coming with meat or rice.
Best take away box
One of the best retail stores – 2 or 3 dish with rice on the side “Chinese bento box take away”. They have more than 20 food items available, choice of anykind. From picking combo of vegetarian, heavy meat, or even seafood, accompany with rice – from $20 patacas above. Best favorite store for late workers, blue collars, and housewifes who wish to have a day off and can’t be bothered cooking.
Shredded chicken
This take away store is bests for shredded chicken, from half chicken or whole chicken tear off in pieces, $168 patacas to walk away. The best taste is the sesame sauce, hand mixed with pepper salt, option mixing with mustard and a bit of soy sauce.
Medan Indonesian Snack Express (1972)
Another best pick Indonesian snack point! The 6th take away store with all various kinds of all sorts. Recommended Non-fried spring rolls, chicken glutinous rice wrapped in banana leaves, layered sponge cakes! Each piece roughly costs $8 patacas, all put in small bags for easy grab and eat.
It’s not just that! they have tremendous bubble tea and well known express take away stores to take away, Fried chicken stores, fresh fruit stores, well known bakery stores to pick from! Worthwhile to stay for a quick snack meal, overnight fill up stomach location!
